“...while the story magic pours over me.” is
the last line of my favorite poem in Did You See What I Saw? Poems about
School. Both as a child and as an adult, story was and is magic for me.
I was a teacher, a reading specialist, and a college instructor before
following a childhood dream. I wanted to be a children’s book author. What
I enjoyed most about my career as an educator was sharing wonderful books with children and
teachers. Now I do author visits at schools, conferences, and libraries and
share my own poetry books, early chapter books, biographies, and picture
books for both young and older children.
I
started writing about what I know. Did You See What I Saw? Poems about
School was my first published book . Later on,
My Teacher for
President was published. That book came right out of my
classroom experiences.
The
world of the teeny tiny has always fascinated me. The star of my
Teeny
Tiny Ghost series is so frightened he scares himself! Watch him cope in
his teeny tiny world as he encounters bullies and monsters.
I
love history!
Or I
do now.
When
I was a kid, history seemed like a boring collection of dates and events
that had to be memorized. Once I discovered that stories make up history,
and began to examine the lives of people who helped shape the past, I
started to look at the world in a new way. Voices of Ancient Egypt
was
followed by Abe Lincoln: The Boy Who Loved Books. Colonial Voices
will be coming in 2008, and Amelia Earhart: Fly She
Did and Johnny Appleseed: His Trail of Trees are under contract.
So
welcome to my site. It was created by my husband Earl to share my
background, books,
author visits to schools, and how I love to bring the
magic of story to kids, parents, teachers, librarians, and writers.
